Do you have an old tire that you want to turn into a swing? Below, I explain how to make a tire swing using chain or rope.
The Easier Way to Make a Tire Swing…
First of all, you can get a kit for making tire swings. These kits typically come with chains and bolts to which you attach your tire.
As you’d expect, swing kits make the building project easy. You don’t have to worry about which bolts to buy and how much weight they will support.
This kit, for example, supports up to 450 lbs. The bolts are already securely attached to the chain, so that’s one task you can check off before you even start.
Surprisingly, this $40 package doesn’t cost much more than purchasing materials individually. For instance, heavy duty steel chain costs about $1.50/foot
In addition to swinging back and forth and side-to-side, this set-up enables the tire to swing around in a circle. Note: Make sure to allow 5-6 feet clearance all around the swing.

Alternatively, you can make a swing without actually buying a kit. You can either (1) use a metal chain with rope to hand it form a tree or (2) use just a rope and a tire. These videos explain how to do both methods.

Plastic Tire Kit for Swings
Yet another option is getting a complete swing kit that includes the tire too. Packages conveniently includes all hardware. Just get a hanging kit if you need one.
The advantage is that you don’t have to already have a tire. In addition, this plastic tire doesn’t get kids all dirty after they’ve been swinging on it.
It also includes a swivel attachment, so the tire can spin as well as swing.
The disadvantage is that the Swing N Slide doesn’t support as much weight (250 lbs max). It’s not a real, authentic tire either.
